Our team hopes this note finds you enjoying the Holiday Season and looking forward to a wonderful New Year’s celebration, wherever you are.
It will be my family's first as Coloradans, having just moved to Denver from our home of the past 25 years, Washington, DC. I have immensely enjoyed my visits to the Centennial State during my first year as President of the NACB, particularly as I came to know so many wonderful members of the vibrant cannabis community. I welcome meeting more of you; please reach out to Andrew@NACB.com.
This move was certainly an important personal and family milestone, but it was just a small part of what made 2017 especially inspiring. Looking back, all of us at the NACB are enormously proud of the relationships we have begun with you and our collective progress toward helping the industry Be Ready and take control of its future. Notably, we:
- Established governing rules for the NACB Self-Regulatory Organization (SRO).
No small feat, laying the foundation for how NACB members will administer self-governance was critical to ensure the SRO will function in accordance with the stringent and auditable standards regulators expect of such bodies.
- Welcomed the very best of U.S. cannabis as NACB Founding Members.
We are thrilled and gratified that so many respected companies in cannabis share our vision and urgency to begin self-regulation, have joined us and are already leaning in. At times our Standards Governance Board meetings have exceeded leaders sharing expertise and passion and we believe they will be forever remembered as “founding mothers and fathers” in the industry. Their work to develop NACB standards that will likely help govern cannabis into the future cannot be under-valued. (By the way, there is still an opportunity to join and we welcome you now.)
- Developed the SRO’s first NACB Standard.
The NACB recognizes the importance of creating standards that are in alignment with Federal priorities and the SGB identified Product Labeling as the first standard to tackle. With the help of very productive SGB meetings and countless hours of research, we expect to publish this standard for public comment on NACB.com in January. We will alert you then and hope to receive your advice.
- Progressed NACB technology and Compliance Platform.
We took important steps to better understand the real-world needs of our members and received guidance from individual and corporate technologists. We are learning alongside our members and software developers and our commitment to lean and ongoing education will help us build a better SRO, including the core SRO software we plan to roll out exclusively to NACB members in 2018.
In 2017, we moved significantly ahead on our vision for the NACB, aiming to protect the future and enhance the growth of the most well-run and compliant cannabis businesses in the industry. We look forward to continuing on our path in 2018 and hope you’ll be part of it. Until then, here’s wishing you, your teams and your families a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.
